UN - AFICS Celebrations

AFICS Philippines, in cooperation with the Philippine Center for Economic Development (PCED), UPSE and the UN Resident Coordinator Office in the Philippines, held a Policy Forum on Multilateral Cooperation and the UN at a Crossroads on 19 November 2025. 

AFICS did it again! To mark UN's 80th Anniversary, AFICS-PHL organized a grand reunion of UN retirees, associates, and friends on 17 October 2025.

This 2025 gathering marked AFICS-PHL’s emerging tradition of celebrating the UN’s anniversary by organizing various events and bringing together the UN family and friends. 

AFICS President Thetis Mangahas welcomed the guests, followed by inspiring messages from Emma Lacandula-Eblahan of the UN Police, and H.E. UN Resident Coordinator Arnaud Peral. The programme featured music, dancing, games, raffles, a Philippine-inspired attire competition, an auction, a bazaar, and surprise musical performances from the participants that delighted everyone. 

The event was held at the McKinley Hill Village Club House. Under the dedication of the Organizing Committee led by Anna Senga, the months of preparation resulted in an afternoon filled with fellowship and entertainment.

As conversations continued long after the formal programme ended, one thing was evident—the UN spirit remains alive in its former staff and colleagues. The reunion was not only a celebration of the United Nations' 80th Anniversary, but also a celebration of the friendships, dedication, and shared purpose that continue to unite the AFICS community.

Raising the bar once again, the 79th UN Anniversary celebration was a memorable evening filled with vibrant energy, a delightful buffet, and lively music, singing and dancing.

The theme was "Working for Sustainable Development" and the event opened with an inspiring video message from Gustavo Gonzales, the UN Resident Coordinator in the Philippines and a welcome message by AFICS President Thetis Mangahas. 

A well-prepared video documenting the work of the United Nations in promoting sustainable development as well as the outreach work of AFICS provided a better understanding of both the UN and AFICS’ mandate and achievements so far.

Matija Kovac, Head of the UN Resident Coordinator's Office (RCO) in the Philippines gave a short yet heartfelt congratulatory speech, setting the perfect tone for the evening. He then led the toast, symbolizing the shared commitment to making the world a better place.

Held at the McKinley Hill Village Clubhouse, the evening brought together former and current members of the UN family, strengthening the bonds that continue well beyond their years of service. Friends and members of the Zonta Club also joined the celebration.

The entertainment kept the evening lively, thanks to host and entertainer Kate, as well as impromptu performances by Mira Kovac, Dr. Mahar Mangahas, Sarah Daway-Ducanes, Atty. Hector Soliman, and other guests who delighted everyone with their songs.

With music that had everyone tapping their feet, the dance floor quickly filled with guests enjoying ballroom dancing, line dancing, and lively group numbers. Laughter echoed throughout the evening as high spirits and camaraderie made the celebration truly memorable.
